I can' t recall the last time I saw a hitchhiker and somehow I feel a degree of sadness that this generation of college students is deprived of those adventures, stories and random acts of kindness that both enlightened us and got us to our destinations. I seriously doubt if it is anymore dangerous today. If anything it is safer with the vast improvement in vehicular safety standards from belts and air bags to better roads and signage. What is different is multi channel 24 hour media put on steroids by the web where every murder everywhere is known to all every minute of the day. My longest trip? A winding journey from Detroit through wild beauty of the mountains of the western Virginias and on to Durham and Duke where you and E so graciously hosted me...
