I was starting to feel bad about apparently being the only guy who doesn't get why the San Francisco Chronicle is in so deep a financial hole. Then I read the recent article in Editor and Publisher about the Chron woes, a piece in which outgoing ME Robert Rosenthal -- whose sudden exit is rather mysterious, though probably related to the newsroom cutbacks rather than a desire to spend more time with his family, no disrespect meant to his family -- had this to say:
He was not sure what impact the coming cuts would have on the paper, or why it has had to resort to such measures given the quality of work his staff produces. "I don't really understand it," he said of the Chronicle's poor financial situation. "I don't know why it has been such a difficult situation for the Chronicle on the business side."
